Does the environment play a role in the current levels of obesity?  The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) investigated the term “built environment” which initially included homes, schools, workplaces, highways, urban sprawl and air pollution.  The term is currently broadened to include public policy, political action and access to fresh food, physical activity and leisure time.  Many researchers are spending significant amounts of time investigating the effects of the environment on obesity, while appearing to ignore the simple message of individual choice when consuming more calories than are burned.

Is soy safe?  While many women are using soy supplements to combat the symptoms of menopause, no double-blind controlled studies exist that measure the safety of soy supplements in humans.  “And while some experts tout soy as a cancer preventative, others say that for postmenopausal women, consuming soy in large doses, especially in isoflavone supplements, may elevate the risk of getting breast cancer or pose other health risks.

1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure.  This is an increase of 1/3 during the last ten years.  65 million Americans have hypertension, which is 8% of the population.  The increasing number of hypertensive people is attributed to an aging population and the rapidly growing overweight and obese population.  Physicians advise the need to count calories, maintain and healthy weight and exercise.
