By 1999 nearly 40% of baby boomers spent more money on skin care than ever before.  Even consumers under 30 have realized that in order to look younger they must pay more attention to protecting their skin by spending more on preventative measures to reduce photo damage.  Just in the United States, one can see the rise in billions of dollars spent each year on skin care products.

But, is all of this spending on skin care products necessary to redefine the aging process?  The experts say no.  Exercise, sound nutrition and resistance training is the key to healthy skin and a youthful appearance.

Richard and Diane cover the topic, “Beauty is Skin Deep” in their latest Bodybuilding for Baby Boomers article on Bodybuilding.com.  To learn more about the secrets of healthy skin and a youthful appearance, click here to read the rest of their column.

Baby Boomer Quick Tips and Facts

25% of the calories we consume come from the junk food category.  Based upon a survey of 4700 people, soft drinks account for 7.1% of the total calories consumed.  Soft drinks, sweets, desserts and alcoholic beverages account for 23.8% of the calories each day.  Salty snacks and fruit flavored drinks add an additional 5% to the total calorie count.  Survey respondents that ate the most junk food consumed the least amount of nutrient-dense foods.

Gene therapy to build better bodies.  Gene therapy that blocks myostatin in humans is showing promise in treating both muscular dystrophy and frailty associated with aging.  Research on mice, conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, resulted in muscles 15-30% larger than the control group.  Middle-aged mice that were injected with genes did not weaken in old age.

US workaholism is coined a “respectable addiction.”  Workaholism is an obsession that is all-occupying and prevents workaholics from maintaining healthy relationships, outside interests or even take measures to protect their health.  Workaholics seek high-stress jobs that create and maintain an adrenaline rush.

Problems with the supply of flu vaccines.  Chiron Corporation announced the discovery of tainted flu vaccine doses in its factory.  50 million vaccines are affected.  Dr. Julie Gerberding, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects only a minor delay in the shipment of flu shots and expects to effectively vaccinate the population at risk.

What are net carbs Also known as impact carbs or effective carbs, was invented by the food industry to capitalize on the current low-carb phenomenon.  Net carbs are calculated by taking the total grams of carbohydrates per serving, and then subtracting the grams of fiber and sugar alcohols.  Sugar alcohols are not sugar or alcohol, but rather, sweeteners.  Food manufacturers claim that the fiber isn’t digested and sugar alcohols have a negligible effect on blood glucose, so they don’t count.
While effects of sugar alcohols on blood glucose in minimal, sugar alcohols do have calories that MUST be counted.
